Acne Skin Disease Impact

Scale and effects of the Acne problem

Acne hits most people at some stage in their lives.

80% experience acne, 25% sufficiently severely to need treatment.
85 million suffer acne in North America alone.

Acne is a skin disease, occurring mainly in adolescence, but also later in life.  The disease presents with widely varying degrees of severity and can affect most parts of the body.  Severe or untreated acne can lead to permanent and unsightly scarring.

Acne is not contagious, life threatening or physically disabling - so often does not receive much medical priority.

But acne causes real suffering, both physical and mental. Victims often report missed opportunities through loss of confidence due to Acne.

Acne is the subject of widespread ignorance and misunderstanding - common but unfounded beliefs leave many acne victims feeling unworthy and embarrassed.

Acne outbreaks should be treated promptly to reduce discomfort and risk of scarring. Early treatment will usually moderate the severity of acne incidents and so limit permanent scar damage and associated psychological distress.

Acne treatment is straightforward and several options are available depending on severity. Some treatments for severe acne have side effects and are available only on prescription under medical supervision.

The underlying causes and triggers of acne are complex functions of overall body chemistry - and still imperfectly understood even by researchers. Common factors observed include hormonal changes/imbalances and stress.
